Midfielder Rodri has arrived at El Prat airport to complete a €76.5 million transfer to Barcelona after seven seasons with Manchester City.
Manchester City midfielder Rodri arrived at Barcelona's El Prat airport on Monday to finalize a €76.5 million (£65.3M) transfer to the Catalan club. The 30-year-old Spain international reached a formal agreement on Sunday after Barcelona saw an initial €50 million opening offer rejected last week. The deal, which follows a failed second bid, is expected to be finalized after a medical scheduled for Tuesday. If the physical assessment is successful, the signing could be announced later that day, with a formal presentation at the Nou Camp pencilled in for Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters upon his arrival, the midfielder described the move as a "dream come true" and expressed his desire to compete for the Champions League trophy. Rodri noted that he already knows the majority of his new teammates from the Spanish national team, with whom he lifted the World Cup this summer. The transfer concludes an intense negotiation period where Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca attempted to retain the player, calling him a "top player" following Sunday's Community Shield fixture. Despite City's efforts to secure a new contract, the player entered the final year of his deal at the Etihad Stadium amid interest from both Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Seven Seasons of Success at Manchester City
Rodri departs the Etihad Stadium after a seven-year tenure that included four Premier League titles. His most iconic moment for the club occurred in the 2023 Champions League final, where he scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan. In 2024, he was awarded the Ballon d'Or, though he received the trophy while sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. That specific ailment forced him to miss the majority of the 2024-25 campaign.
His final season under former manager Pep Guardiola was further hampered by physical setbacks. Hamstring and groin issues limited the former Atletico Madrid player to just 33 appearances during that term. Most recently, the midfielder underwent back surgery following his World Cup triumph and only returned to Manchester City training this past Friday.
Squad Overhaul and Midfield Transitions
Manchester City have already initiated significant changes to their midfield roster this summer. The club spent €135 million to acquire Elliot Anderson and reached an agreement to sell Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadisah. Reports indicate the Premier League side is also nearing a deal for Lille star Ayyoub Bouaddi and has been linked with Chelsea's Enzo Fernández.
Barcelona’s successful pursuit of Rodri follows a week of escalating bids. The Catalan giants are looking to integrate the World Cup winner immediately as they target domestic and European silverware. Rodri emphasized his readiness to "work hard and give my best" for the club after what he described as an intense few days of negotiations. The move marks a return to Spain for the veteran, who previously represented Atletico Madrid before his move to England seven years ago.
