Roman Anthony Sidelined for AL Wild Card Series with Hand and Wrist Injuries

Roman Anthony has been removed from the Red Sox postseason roster following a 9-0 Game 1 loss to the Yankees due to muscle damage in his right wrist.

Boston Red Sox manager Chad Tracy announced Wednesday that outfielder Roman Anthony is ruled out for the American League Wild Card Series and the foreseeable future. Imaging conducted Wednesday morning revealed additional damage to muscles in Anthony's right hand and wrist. The 22-year-old started Game 1 against the New York Yankees as the designated hitter and leadoff batter, going 0-for-2 with two strikeouts on checked swings before being pinch-hit for in the sixth inning with Boston trailing 2-0.

Infielder Curtis Mead replaces Anthony on the active roster for Game 2. Mead, acquired from the Washington Nationals on July 25 for Connelly Early, has not played since fracturing his left wrist in his debut with the team. The Red Sox offense enters the second game of the series coming off a 9-0 shutout loss in the opener.

Anthony’s current injury follows a regular season where he missed 101 games due to a partially torn tendon in a joint connecting his right ring finger to his wrist, an injury sustained on May 4. After returning on Aug. 30, he batted .262 with four home runs and a .797 OPS over 25 games in September. He concluded the 2026 season with a .245 batting average and five home runs across 55 total appearances. This marks the second consecutive postseason Anthony has missed; he was sidelined during last year's three-game series loss to New York due to an oblique injury suffered in early September.
