Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced he will take over playcalling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb ahead of Sunday's game against the Chargers.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced Thursday he is reclaiming offensive playcalling duties from coordinator Davis Webb. The change follows a 2-2 start where the Denver offense ranked 27th in scoring and total yards per game. Webb, whose tenure as playcaller lasted four games, described the decision as "not ideal" during a Friday press conference but stated he remains committed to his role and quarterback Bo Nix.

The Broncos currently rank 29th in rushing yards per game and 30th in explosive plays, recording only 16 total runs of 10-plus yards or passes of 20-plus yards. The team has struggled with consistency, resulting in 27.5% of possessions ending in three-and-outs. Through four weeks, Nix ranks 22nd in the league with a 46.1 QBR and 27th in average air yards per attempt at 5.9.

Payton cited frustration with first-down efficiency and the run game as primary reasons for the shift. Despite the demotion, Payton referred to Webb as a future head coach. The Broncos' first four opponents held a combined 13-3 record and all ranked within the top 10 for scoring defense. Denver travels to SoFi Stadium to face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, a defense currently ranked 24th in scoring.
