Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton announced Monday that the team is not considering benching quarterback Bo Nix. Despite a 4-2 start, the Denver offense currently ranks 26th in scoring and 31st in third-down conversions. Payton attributed the struggles to a need for improved offensive line play and a more balanced rushing attack rather than solely the performance of the rookie signal-caller.
Nix recorded 107 passing yards in a recent overtime victory against the Seattle Seahawks and 123 yards in a win over the Los Angeles Chargers, representing two of the three lowest totals of his career. Statistical rankings place Nix 30th in completions over expectation at minus-4.0%, 31st in QBR at 38.2, and 32nd in yards per attempt at 5.6. During the win over Seattle, Denver failed to run more than five plays or gain more than 23 yards on any of their final 10 possessions following a second-quarter touchdown.
The Broncos offense is currently tied for last in the NFL in plays of 20 yards or more, with their longest gain against the Seahawks measuring 16 yards. The team ranks 26th in rushing and 27th in passing yardage. A Ja'Quan McMillian interception at the Seattle 43-yard line eventually set up the game-winning field goal in overtime last Thursday. Denver has now scored 17 or fewer points in three games this season and went 3-of-26 on third downs across their last two outings.
