Two-time NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has officially joined the ownership group of Spanish side Atlético Madrid.

Atlético Madrid announced on Thursday that Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has become a shareholder in the club. The 28-year-old Canadian, a two-time NBA MVP, joins an ownership group at a time when the team currently sits second in the LaLiga standings. While the specific size of the investment was not disclosed, the Spanish side has been majority owned by the U.S.-based fund Apollo Global Management since last year.

Gilgeous-Alexander won the 2025 NBA finals and was named MVP of that series before earning his second league MVP title the following year. His professional history includes a 2019 trade to the Thunder following a single season with the LA Clippers, as well as representing Canada during the 2024 Olympics. The guard joins other high-profile NBA investors in European football, such as LeBron James and Kevin Durant.

Atlético Madrid remains one of the most successful organizations in Spain, having secured LaLiga titles in 2014 and 2021 under the leadership of coach Diego Simeone. The club described the partnership as one based on shared values of ambition and excellence. Gilgeous-Alexander previously signaled his interest in the team earlier this year when he was photographed wearing an Atlético tracksuit.
