Stan Wawrinka concluded his 24-year professional career on Tuesday with a 7-5, 7-6 (2) loss to eighth-seeded Jiri Lehecka in Basel.

Stan Wawrinka’s professional tennis career concluded on Tuesday at the Swiss Indoors in Basel following a 7-5, 7-6 (2) first-round loss to eighth-seeded Jiri Lehecka. The 41-year-old’s final competitive shot was a backhand that landed wide, ending a farewell season he had announced in December 2025. The Associated Press reports that Wawrinka, who turned professional in 2002, finished his career at his home tournament in front of a vociferous crowd.

A former world No. 3, Wawrinka won 16 tour-level titles and three Grand Slam championships. Each of his major titles was secured by defeating the world No. 1 in the final: he beat Rafael Nadal at the 2014 Australian Open and Novak Djokovic at both the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open.

Beyond his singles success, Wawrinka earned an Olympic gold medal in doubles alongside Roger Federer at the 2008 Beijing Games. The pair also led Switzerland to its first Davis Cup title in 2014. Wawrinka retires as one of the few players in the modern era to win three different Grand Slam tournaments.
