Four-time Gold Glove winner Steven Kwan is moving to center field during spring training as manager Stephen Vogt evaluates the Cleveland Guardians' defensive alignment.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt announced on Thursday that Steven Kwan centerfield appearances will become a focal point of spring training over the next several weeks. Kwan, who has secured four Gold Gloves in left field, currently shares the franchise record for the most Gold Gloves by an outfielder with Kenny Lofton. Despite his defensive accolades in left, the two-time All-Star has only appeared in eight major league games at the center field position across his five-season career.
During his tenure in the Cleveland minor-league system, Kwan served primarily as a center fielder before transitioning to the corners in the big leagues. The shift comes as Vogt attempts to identify the most effective outfield combination for the defending AL Central Division champions. Last season, Kwan and Jose Ramirez stood as the only consistent offensive threats for the club, necessitating a strategy that maximizes run production without sacrificing the elite leather that defined Kwan's early career.
Defensive Adjustments and Rookie Performance
While Kwan prepares for his positional shift, rookie Chase DeLauter is also expected to rotate through center and right field during Cactus League play. DeLauter recently made his major league debut during the American League Wild Card series against the Detroit Tigers. His initial performance featured a mix of high-stakes errors and defensive highlights. In the first inning of his debut, DeLauter dropped a high fly ball hit by Gleyber Torres. However, he redeemed the misplay three innings later by delivering a pinpoint throw to third base, resulting in Zach McKinstry being tagged out by Jose Ramirez.
George Valera is slated to handle left field duties during upcoming spring training games to facilitate these experiments. Vogt indicated that the coaching staff is prioritizing a balance between the best defensive unit and the highest offensive potential. The manager noted that it may take approximately two weeks before Kwan officially makes his first spring appearance in center field, as the team currently focuses on general conditioning and early-camp drills in Goodyear.
Optimizing the Guardians Outfield Depth
The decision to move a four-time Gold Glover stems from Kwan's own expressed interest in returning to the middle of the grass. Vogt confirmed to reporters that the player approached him regarding the possibility of playing center at times. This flexibility allows the Guardians to explore different configurations that could include DeLauter’s power or Valera’s range in the corners. The team is coming off a season where they repeated as division winners, yet the front office remains focused on evolving the roster's versatility.
"You're going to see guys moving all over the field during spring, like we've done previous years," Vogt stated during his Thursday press conference. This tactical fluidity is designed to ensure the roster can adapt to various game situations once the regular season begins. By testing Kwan in a more demanding defensive role, the Guardians aim to determine if his elite tracking ability translates back to the position he mastered as a prospect.
Statistical Context of the Position Change
Kwan’s transition is significant given his historical standing within the Cleveland organization. Matching Kenny Lofton’s four Gold Gloves established him as one of the premier defensive anchors in franchise history. However, his limited eight-game sample size in center field at the MLB level remains a variable the coaching staff must address before Opening Day. The move also impacts the infield dynamics, as Jose Ramirez remains the primary target for outfield assists, as evidenced by the McKinstry out at third base during the postseason.
As the Cactus League schedule progresses, the Guardians will monitor how these defensive rotations affect the offensive output of their core hitters. With Kwan and Ramirez carrying the bulk of the offensive load last year, finding a way to integrate younger players like DeLauter and Valera into the daily lineup is essential for the team's pursuit of another AL Central title. The next fourteen days in Arizona will serve as the primary evaluation window for this defensive restructuring.
