Teenage Scorers Make History as USMNT Beats Chile 4-2 in St. Louis

Mathis Albert became the youngest scorer in USMNT history at 17 years, 131 days during a 4-2 win over Chile.

The United States men’s national team defeated Chile 4-2 on Tuesday at Energizer Park in St. Louis, led by history-making goals from teenagers Julian Hall and Mathis Albert. Sebastian Berhalter opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a first-time finish following a Sergiño Dest pass. Chile equalized before halftime when Diego Ulloa capitalized on a failed clearance by goalkeeper Chris Brady. Maximiliano Gutiérrez then gave Chile a 2-1 lead early in the second half with a curling strike that beat debutant goalkeeper Brian Schwake.

Julian Hall leveled the match in the second half by heading in a Giovanni Reyna cross, becoming the youngest player to score in his first two USMNT appearances. Chris Richards later put the U.S. ahead by heading home a corner delivered by Berhalter. In second-half stoppage time, 17-year-old Mathis Albert became the youngest goalscorer in program history when he capped the scoring. The victory followed a 4-1 win over Peru on Saturday, marking consecutive four-goal performances for the U.S. roster.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino fielded a starting lineup with an average age of 23 years and 25 days, the youngest of his tenure. Six players earned their first starts: Hall, Brady, Adri Mehmeti, Neil Pierre, Brooklyn Raines, and Frankie Westfield. Antonee Robinson captained the side for the first time following the retirement announcement of 38-year-old Tim Ream. The match ended with yellow cards for Richards and Leandro Hernández after a 94th-minute confrontation involving both benches. The USMNT next faces Mexico in Glendale, Arizona, on Saturday.
