In the current campaign, the 2018 ninth-round draft pick recorded a 7-5 record with a 2.79 ERA and 116 strikeouts across 96 2/3 innings. Despite losing their top pitcher, the Tigers moved within 2 1/2 games of the final American League wild-card spot after winning the first two games of the series against Oakland. Hinch emphasized that because Skubal was not scheduled to pitch on Sunday, the team had to remain focused on the immediate game despite the loss of his presence. The manager praised Skubal’s preparation and desire to win, stating that such an impact remains with the remaining players even as the pitcher boards a plane for Los Angeles.

First baseman Spencer Torkelson noted that the team successfully blocked out external noise during the Saturday night win.
