Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 35 points and reached the free-throw line 14 times during a 131-106 opening night loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Miami Heat 131-106 on Wednesday night, spoiled by a 45-point performance from Anthony Edwards. Edwards converted 9-of-17 attempts from 3-point range, while teammate LaMelo Ball added 21 points on five triples. Minnesota finished with 21 total three-pointers and dominated the glass with a 52-34 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive boards compared to Miami's four.
In his first regular-season game for Miami, Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Heat with 35 points and 14 free-throw attempts. Despite his individual offensive output, the Heat struggled as a unit, shooting just 24% from beyond the arc. The new-look roster, which features offseason additions Klay Thompson and Bobby Portis alongside Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, and Davion Mitchell, had only played two preseason games together due to Adebayo’s recent groin injury.
Following the loss, Antetokounmpo emphasized a lack of defensive communication and trust within the rotation. He noted that the team became discouraged once Edwards and Ball began hitting deep shots, failing to increase physicality in response. Adebayo echoed these concerns, stating the team must improve defensive swarming and offensive consistency when fatigued. The Heat will attempt to earn their first win of the season when they host the Detroit Pistons on Friday.
