The summer transfer window closes on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. ET (11 p.m. BST) with Premier League spending projected to surpass the £2.5 billion mark. Manchester City is currently pursuing Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández in a deal that could exceed the £125 million fee Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak 12 months ago. Chelsea, who signed the 25-year-old Argentina international from Benfica for a then-record £106.8 million in January 2023, reportedly demand a fee higher than the £116 million City recently paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson.

Manchester City has already finalized an £86 million deal for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and is currently in talks with Liverpool for Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo. The proposed £85 million transfer for Gakpo is contingent on Liverpool securing Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola for £123 million. Should Gakpo arrive at the Etihad, winger Jack Grealish will be permitted to leave on loan, with former clubs Everton and Aston Villa identified as potential destinations.

Arsenal and Atlético Madrid Negotiations

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is attempting to secure Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, despite the Spanish club’s insistence that the former City player would not be allowed to join Barcelona. While Álvarez returned to training with Diego Simeone’s squad following a standoff, a deal could be triggered if Viktor Gyökeres moves to the Metropolitano. To facilitate this, Arsenal may need to offset a summer spend that includes £75 million for Bruno Guimarães and £51 million for Ezri Konsa.

CEO Richard Garlick has suggested the club might consider offers for 19-year-old homegrown talent Myles Lewis-Skelly if the right opportunity arises, despite Arteta’s earlier claims the versatile defender would stay. Chelsea and Manchester United are monitoring the teenager, who operates at left-back and in midfield. United is also tracking Newcastle’s Lewis Hall as an alternative to Luke Shaw, though Hall is expected to remain at St James' Park.

Everton and Tottenham Squad Reshaping

Everton manager David Moyes is closing in on a deal to re-sign Richarlison from Tottenham, while Iliman Ndiaye is set to move to Spurs in a separate transaction. The Blues are also interested in USMNT forward Folarin Balogun, though a €40 million move for the Monaco striker requires the departure of Beto to raise funds. Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea has identified Monaco’s £40 million-rated Lamine Camara as a replacement should Fernández depart for Manchester.

Tottenham, under Roberto De Zerbi, is focused on offloading Kevin Danso to Sunderland and negotiating Pape Matar Sarr’s move to Juventus. If these exits are finalized, Spurs may challenge City for Gakpo or pursue AC Milan’s Christian Pulisic. The North London club previously showed interest in Marcus Rashford, but the 28-year-old forward has been reintegrated into the Manchester United squad by manager Michael Carrick following loan spells at Barcelona and Aston Villa.

Manchester United Loan Departures

Manchester United’s summer expenditure stands at £148 million for Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba, and goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The club is unlikely to make further signings unless a left-back is found, but Joshua Zirkzee is expected to depart on loan, with Juventus and Fiorentina expressing interest. Fenerbahce maintains interest in Rashford, though United will only consider significant offers for the England international.
