Trevor Zegras Assessed Rare Equipment Violation Penalty in Flyers' Preseason Victory

Philadelphia Flyers forward Trevor Zegras was assessed a minor penalty for "improperly wearing the equipment" during the second period of a 2-0 preseason home victory against the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. According to ESPN, the infraction occurred after officials warned Zegras about tucking his jersey into his pants at the start of a shift. Scouting The Refs noted this was the first time an NHL player has been penalized for this specific violation since the 2013-14 season.

NHL Rule 9.5 mandates that all protective equipment, excluding gloves, headgear, neck protection, and goalkeepers' leg pads, must be worn underneath the uniform. Under Rule 12.1, officials are required to issue a warning before imposing a minor penalty for illegal equipment. Zegras acknowledged he started the game with his jersey tucked, noting it is his usual style of play.

Flyers coach Rick Tocchet stated that teams were notified weeks ago that equipment compliance would be a point of emphasis for officials this season. Tocchet suggested Zegras must use his tie-down—the fabric loop securing the jersey to the pants—to prevent future infractions. The NHL last enforced a crackdown on tucked jerseys over a decade ago, a move that faced criticism from players like Alex Ovechkin for restricting individual expression.
