Trey Mancini Retires Following 5-Game Angels Stint and 129 Career Home Runs

Trey Mancini announced his retirement on Tuesday, concluding a career highlighted by 129 home runs and a 2022 World Series championship.

Trey Mancini announced his retirement on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, following a final five-game stint with the Los Angeles Angels. The 34-year-old right-handed batter concluded his major league career with a .263 batting average, 129 home runs, and 404 RBIs. His final major league appearance occurred on June 14, three days before he was designated for assignment on June 17. During his brief return to the big leagues this season, Mancini recorded three hits while playing first base in a 5-4 loss to the Houston Astros, a contest that spanned 10 innings.

Prior to his promotion to Anaheim, Mancini spent the early portion of the year with Triple-A Salt Lake. In the minor leagues this season, he posted a .273 batting average complemented by six home runs, 29 RBIs, and three stolen bases. This performance followed a February agreement on a minor league contract that included an invitation to major league spring training. The veteran infielder sought to re-establish himself at the highest level after his 2023 campaign with the Chicago Cubs.

Career Milestones and World Series Success

Mancini’s professional journey was defined by a decade-long tenure within the Baltimore Orioles organization. He spent parts of six seasons at the major league level with Baltimore, reaching a statistical peak in 2019 when he hit a career-high 29 home runs. His trajectory was interrupted in 2020 when he missed the entire season to undergo surgery for the removal of a malignant tumor from his colon.

Returning to the field in 2021, Mancini earned the AL Comeback Player of the Year award. His time in Baltimore ended in 2022 when the Orioles traded him to the Houston Astros. This move proved pivotal as Mancini contributed to Houston’s 2022 World Series championship, securing his only career ring. Following his title run, he joined the Chicago Cubs for a portion of the 2023 season, though he later expressed a public wish that he had performed better for the fans in Chicago.

Minor League Path and Final Farewell

Before landing with the Angels, Mancini navigated the minor league systems of the Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins, and Arizona Diamondbacks. In July of the previous year, he opted out of a minor league deal with Arizona. During that stint with Triple-A Reno, he maintained a .308 batting average and hit 16 home runs.

In a statement released via Instagram, Mancini expressed gratitude to the various organizations he represented, specifically naming the Orioles, Astros, Cubs, Angels, Reds, Marlins, and Diamondbacks. "Thank you, baseball," he wrote to mark the end of his playing days. His retirement brings a close to a career marked by significant resilience, transitioning from a cancer diagnosis in 2020 to a world championship two years later and a final major league hit in a one-run extra-inning game against his former team in Houston.
