Trinity Rodman started her 21st consecutive match and helped secure a 1-0 victory for the Washington Spirit against Bay FC at Audi Field.

Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman created the decisive scoring sequence in a 1-0 victory over Bay FC on Sunday at Audi Field, ending the club's four-game winless streak. The lone goal arrived four minutes into first-half stoppage time when Sofia Cantore released Rodman down the left flank. Rodman drove into the penalty area and fired a shot that struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced near the goal line. Paige Metayer followed the play to bundle the ball into the net at the 45+4' mark. This result moves Washington back into second place in the NWSL standings following a stretch that included losses to San Diego Wave, North Carolina Courage, and Orlando Pride, plus a 1-1 draw against Angel City.

Rodman has now started all 21 of Washington’s league matches this season, accumulating 1,772 minutes on the pitch. Her performance on Sunday moved her past Ashley Hatch for the most regular-season goal contributions in Spirit history, reaching a total of 62. The 24-year-old forward has recorded a single-season career-high 10 goals and five assists so far this year, surpassing her previous best of 14 goal contributions set in 2024. During the match, Bay FC produced 19 shots to Washington's 16, requiring Spirit goalkeeper Sandy MacIver to make four saves to maintain the clean sheet.

Overcoming Persistent Back Issues

The current season marks a significant physical turnaround for Rodman, who missed nearly four months of the previous campaign due to a persistent back problem. She stepped away from team activities in April after years of dealing with recurring spasms and related complications. In March 2025, Rodman had expressed doubts to ESPN regarding whether her back would ever reach full health. After returning to training in July and making her competitive comeback against the Portland Thorns on August 3 of that year—where she scored a stoppage-time winner in a 2-1 victory—she has focused on maintaining her availability.

To preserve her health, Rodman has adjusted her playing style to avoid throwing her body into physical challenges as frequently as she did in the past. She described herself as a "new and improved" version of the player who was bedevilled by injuries last season. Despite these tactical tweaks to protect her longevity, she maintains that her professional identity remains the same. The forward noted that she has transitioned from barely playing last season to being on the field for almost every minute of the current campaign.

Tactical Improvements and Defensive Work

In addition to her role in the opening goal, Rodman contributed defensively in the 87th minute by making a tackle near the Spirit penalty area. She carried the ball forward on a counter-attack, drawing a foul and a yellow card against Bay FC’s Maddie Moreau. During the closing minutes of stoppage time, Rodman repeatedly held possession in the corner to exhaust the clock. She credited the team's improved distances between the attacking group and better connectivity with the number nine position for the breakthrough against Bay FC.

Ending the Winless Streak

Prior to Sunday, Washington had not secured a victory since July 26. The recent winless run included a 1-1 draw with Angel City, a match in which Rodman scored her 10th goal of the season. Following the win over Bay FC, the team received an extra off day from their coach. Rodman stated that experiencing the recent ups and downs provided the squad with the necessary experience to handle pressure as they approach the playoffs. The Spirit forward emphasized that the team is relieved to have "flipped the script" after their difficult August stretch.
