The United States women’s national team recovered from a two-goal halftime deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against world No. 1 Spain on Tuesday at Subaru Park. Spain took a 2-0 lead in the first half following a 27th-minute goal from Alexia Putellas and a 32nd-minute strike by Salma Paralluelo. The visitors capitalized on defensive lapses, including a misplaced pass from goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce that led to the second goal.
Ashley Sanchez initiated the American comeback in the 49th minute, scoring after receiving an assist from Sophia Wilson. Lindsey Heaps provided the secondary pass for the play. The U.S. secured the equalizer in the 86th minute when substitute Mallory Swanson found the net. Michelle Cooper recorded the assist on the tying goal, while Kate del Fava provided the hockey assist after entering the match in the 80th minute.
Coach Emma Hayes utilized several second-half substitutes to shift the momentum, including Lily Yohannes and Alyssa Thompson. The result follows a 2-0 loss to Spain in a friendly held the previous Saturday. The USWNT will next compete in the Concacaf W Championship quarterfinals against El Salvador next month.
