The USWNT fell 2-0 to Spain on Saturday after conceding two goals in the opening 14 minutes due to defensive breakdowns.
World No. 1 Spain defeated the second-ranked United States women's national team 2-0 on Saturday at Audi Field. Spain secured the victory with two goals in the opening 14 minutes, capitalizing on defensive breakdowns. Despite the scoreline, the U.S. outshot Spain 13-6 and limited the visitors to just three shots on goal and 0.43 expected goals.
U.S. forward Sophia Wilson had a potential goal overturned by video review for being offside. Wilson also saw one attempt tipped off the crossbar and another shot skip wide of the far post during the first half. In the second half, midfielder Lily Yohannes had a penalty kick saved by Spanish goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares. Forward Trinity Rodman missed a chance from eight yards out following an Alyssa Thompson cross, while substitute Ashley Sanchez scuffed a back-post opportunity in the 66th minute.
Head coach Emma Hayes noted that the U.S. has closed the gap on the reigning World Cup champions since three years ago. Captain Lindsey Heaps attributed the early goals to a lack of pressure on the ball and transition moments rather than Spain breaking down the U.S. shape. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch on Tuesday in Chester, Pennsylvania.
