Valencia Appoint Javier Aguirre on Initial Deal Until Season End

Javier Aguirre, 67, joins Valencia on an initial contract through the end of the season with an option for a second year.

Valencia have appointed former Mexico manager Javier Aguirre as their new head coach on a contract running until the end of the current season. According to ESPN, the agreement for the 67-year-old to take over at Mestalla includes an option to extend his tenure for a second year. Aguirre replaces Carlos Corberán, who was dismissed last week after the club failed to record a victory in any of their first five league matches.

The club currently sits with four points from their opening seven fixtures. Since Corberán's departure, the team secured a win against Alavés but recently suffered a defeat to Real Sociedad. Valencia represents the seventh Spanish club Aguirre has managed, following previous stints at Osasuna, Atlético Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganés, and Mallorca.

Aguirre arrives at Mestalla after a two-year period leading the Mexican national team, which concluded this past summer with a round-of-16 exit to England at the World Cup. Following that tournament, which Mexico co-hosted, he was succeeded by Rafa Márquez as part of a pre-existing succession plan. His international coaching resume also includes time with the Egyptian and Japanese national teams.
