Valencia in Advanced Talks to Appoint Javier Aguirre as Head Coach

Valencia is expected to make a formal offer to Javier Aguirre in the coming days as the club looks to exit the LaLiga relegation zone.

Valencia has entered advanced negotiations with former Mexico manager Javier Aguirre to fill the club's coaching vacancy, a source told ESPN's Rodra. The LaLiga side currently sits in the relegation zone, having secured only four points from their opening six matches. The search for a new leader began after the club sacked Carlos Corberán last Sunday and appointed Braulio Vázquez as sporting director to oversee the recruitment process.

Aguirre, 67, has emerged as the frontrunner for the position after Ernesto Valverde declined an approach to manage this season following his departure from Athletic Club. The veteran coach most recently led Mexico to the Round of 16 at the last World Cup, where they were defeated by England at the Azteca Stadium. Following that tenure, his assistant Rafael Márquez took over the national team role.

Though Aguirre has received interest from other clubs, he reportedly prefers a return to Spain. His career in LaLiga includes previous managerial roles at Atlético Madrid, Osasuna, Espanyol, Zaragoza, Leganés, and Mallorca. Sources close to the team indicate the Valencia squad would welcome the appointment due to Aguirre's history of successfully navigating relegation battles. A formal offer is expected to be presented to the coach within the coming days.
