Spurs star Victor Wembanyama stated on Thursday that he will not endorse sports betting platforms, prioritizing his personal values over monetary gain.

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama announced Thursday that he will not promote sports betting websites. Following a training camp workout, the 22-year-old Frenchman stated he has previously refused significant financial offers for partnerships that did not align with his values. Wembanyama, who finished third in NBA MVP voting last season, emphasized that his primary goal is to inspire others rather than maximize earnings through gambling platforms.

The two-time All-Star enters his fourth NBA season following a year where he became the first player to unanimously win NBA Defensive Player of the Year. During that campaign, he led the league in blocks for the third consecutive season and helped San Antonio reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014. While the NBA's collective bargaining agreement allows players to endorse sports betting companies with certain restrictions—excluding NBA-related markets—Wembanyama described the trend of players promoting such sites as sad.

Wembanyama’s stance contrasts with several high-profile peers who have entered the betting and prediction market space. LeBron James recently moved from DraftKings to Polymarket, while Kevin Durant serves as a FanDuel endorser and Kalshi investor. Giannis Antetokounmpo became a Kalshi shareholder in February, and Nikola Jokic signed as a brand ambassador for Superbet in 2023. Despite these industry trends, Wembanyama maintained that he intends to use his platform to share positive messages and influence.
