A group led by Vinod Khosla has agreed to a record $9.612 billion Seahawks purchase price to acquire the NFL franchise from the Paul G. Allen estate.
A group spearheaded by San Francisco 49ers limited partner Vinod Khosla reached an agreement on Saturday to acquire the Seattle Seahawks for a record $9.612 billion. This Seahawks purchase price eclipses the previous NFL high of $6.05 billion paid by Josh Harris for the Washington Commanders in 2023 and the $4.65 billion spent by the Walton-Penner family for the Denver Broncos in 2022. The transaction follows a season where Seattle defeated the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. To finalize the deal, the Khosla family must divest a 3.1% stake in the 49ers, which was acquired in 2025 at a valuation exceeding $8.5 billion.
NFL owners have been instructed to reserve a date in late August for a special meeting to vote on the approval of the sale. Upon ratification, the Khosla family will assume the role of controlling owner. Vinod Khosla, the founder of Khosla Ventures with a Forbes-estimated net worth of $13.8 billion, stated that his family is honored to be the next stewards of the franchise. His venture capital firm is known for early-stage investments in Instacart, DoorDash, and OpenAI. The sale proceeds are designated for charitable donation per the instructions of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen.
Transition from the Paul Allen Estate
The Seahawks have been under the management of the Paul G. Allen trust since his passing in 2018, with his sister, Jody Allen, serving as executor. Paul Allen originally purchased the team from Ken Behring in 1996, a move that was formalized in 1997 and prevented the franchise from relocating to Southern California. Jody Allen’s directive includes the eventual sale of both the Seahawks and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. While the Seahawks have now found a buyer, the specific members of Khosla’s investment group remain undisclosed.
Franchise Performance and Infrastructure
Seattle enters this new ownership era having reached the postseason in seven of the last ten years. The team operates under the leadership of General Manager John Schneider and Head Coach Mike Macdonald. Their home venue, Lumen Field, recently underwent nearly $20 million in facility upgrades in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. The stadium is frequently cited by opposing players as one of the most difficult environments in the league. This sale occurs just as the team unveiled its 2026 schedule, which featured a unique winning fragrance promotion.
Historical Context of Sports Valuations
While the $9.612 billion figure sets a new benchmark for the NFL, it falls just short of the $10 billion record for an American sports franchise established by Mark Walter’s acquisition of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025. The Seahawks sale represents a significant escalation from the 2023 Commanders transaction. Khosla’s entry into the Seattle market marks a rapid transition after his brief tenure in the 49ers ownership group. The upcoming August meeting will serve as the final hurdle for the Khosla family to officially succeed the Allen estate and continue the legacy established during Paul Allen's 21-year tenure.
