Walter Cup Missing: Montreal Victoire Replica Lost During Shipment to Alberta

A sterling silver replica of the Walter Cup is missing after failing to arrive in Lethbridge for a scheduled event with Montreal Victoire forward Dara Greig.

The Professional Women's Hockey League confirmed on Friday, August 21, 2026, that a replica of the Walter Cup belonging to the Montreal Victoire is missing. The sterling silver trophy, which weighs approximately 35 pounds and stands 24 inches tall, failed to arrive at its scheduled destination in Lethbridge, Alberta. Montreal secured this hardware in May by defeating Ottawa in Game 4 of a best-of-five series, becoming the first Canadian franchise to claim the title after Minnesota won the league's first two championships.

Victoire forward Dara Greig was scheduled to spend Thursday with the trophy, including a public appearance at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena. However, a person with knowledge of the situation reported that while a container arrived at the site, it was not the specific unit the PWHL had shipped containing the award. Consequently, the planned community events in Lethbridge were postponed indefinitely as the league works with a shipping company to track the 13-inch-wide vessel.

Design and Dimensions of the Missing Trophy

Crafted by Tiffany & Co., the missing team version of the Walter Cup mirrors the original design housed permanently at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The piece features two rods styled to resemble hockey sticks, which support the main cup. Engraved upon the silver surface are six W’s, representing each of the league’s six original franchises. The structure sits atop a base designed to look like a hockey puck, where the names of championship-winning teams are etched into the metal.

Named after PWHL founder and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter and his wife Kimbra, the trophy serves as the primary symbol of achievement in the league. Unlike the National Hockey League, which employs a dedicated handler to travel with the Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not have a specific individual assigned to accompany the trophy during player visits. The league issued a statement at 6:54 PM ET noting that the item did not arrive as expected at its latest stop, though officials declined to provide further logistical details regarding the disappearance.

Logistics and Shipping Discrepancies

The league is currently collaborating with the shipping provider to locate the sterling silver replica. While the original Walter Cup remains secure in Toronto, the team-issued version is the one currently unaccounted for. Two sources speaking on the condition of anonymity confirmed that the shipping error was discovered only when the incorrect container was opened in Alberta.

Montreal's victory over Ottawa in the four-game series finale marked a historic milestone for the franchise, but the physical representation of that win remains lost in transit. The league has not clarified where the trophy was last seen before it was dispatched for Greig’s scheduled day of celebration. As of Friday evening, the search for the 35-pound prize continues as the shipping company attempts to rectify the delivery failure.
