Williams Sisters Fall 2-6, 6-1 (10-8) in Cincinnati Open Doubles Return

Serena and Venus Williams lost a match tiebreaker to Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns on Monday night at the Cincinnati Open.

Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns defeated Serena and Venus Williams 2-6, 6-1 (10-8) on Monday night at the Cincinnati Open. Entering the tournament as a wild card, the Williams sisters forced a match tiebreak after rebounding from a first-set loss to dominate the second set. The deciding tiebreaker saw Kostyuk and Stearns jump to a 6-0 lead before the Williams duo narrowed the gap to 8-7, aided by consecutive double-faults from Kostyuk. Serena Williams delivered a powerful overhead to bring the score to 9-8, but a double-fault by Venus Williams concluded the contest.

This appearance marked the first time the sisters competed together in a non-Grand Slam event since the 2016 Italian Open. It was their first doubles match as a pair since the 2022 U.S. Open. Serena, now 44 years old, returned to the tour this summer after being away since 2022. Venus, age 46, noted that the pair had planned to compete at Wimbledon earlier this year but withdrew following a knee injury Serena sustained during her singles match.

Kostyuk and Stearns Secure Debut Victory

Marta Kostyuk, a native of Ukraine, and Peyton Stearns, a Cincinnati local, are competing in their first tournament as a doubles team. Both players are 24 years old. Despite the experience gap against the 22-time doubles title winners, the pair maintained their composure during the 10-8 tiebreak finish. Stearns and Kostyuk capitalized on the final double-fault to advance past the legendary duo, who have secured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together.

Venus Williams has won all of her career doubles titles alongside Serena. In contrast, Serena Williams earned one of her total titles with Alexandra Stevenson at Leipzig in 2002. Beyond their professional circuit success, the sisters have secured three Olympic gold medals as a team. In singles competition, Serena holds 23 Grand Slam titles while Venus has earned seven.

Swiatek and Rybakina Advance in Singles

Defending champion Iga Swiatek secured her eighth consecutive victory by defeating Maria Sakkari 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Swiatek rallied from a one-set deficit to dominate the final two frames of the match. In other Monday action, second-seeded Elena Rybakina eliminated Magdalena Frech with a 6-4, 7-6 scoreline. Third-ranked Jessica Pegula also advanced, beating fellow American Emma Navarro 7-5, 6-2.

On the men's side, top seed Alexander Zverev recorded his 46th win of the season, the highest total on the ATP tour this year. Zverev outlasted Terence Atmane in two tiebreak sets, finishing 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6). The World No. 3 managed to close out the match despite the narrow margins in both set-ending tiebreakers.

Historical Context of the Williams Return

The Monday night match in Cincinnati served as a significant milestone for the Williams sisters, who had not shared a court in competitive play for nearly four years. Venus Williams commented on the reunion, stating that they would eventually find their way to each other and expressed that it was great to get out there and compete. The sisters' return follows Serena's extended absence from the professional tour, which began after the 2022 season. Their wild card entry provided the Cincinnati crowd a rare look at the pair who have dominated the sport for decades, despite the final result ending in a narrow two-point margin in the tiebreaker.
