Wyndham Clark leads the BMW Championship at 12-under 128 after recording his second consecutive bogey-free round of 64 at Bellerive.
Wyndham Clark maintained his BMW Championship lead on Friday at Bellerive, carding a second consecutive 6-under 64 to reach a 36-hole total of 12-under 128. The two-time U.S. Open champion holds a one-stroke advantage over Gary Woodland, who sits at 11-under following a second-round 65. Clark has played 36 holes without a bogey, facing his only significant par-save pressure during Thursday's round when he converted an 18-foot putt on the 10th hole.
Gary Woodland moved into solo second place by birdying his final two holes on Friday. He struck a 2-iron into the 608-yard par-5 17th and followed with a wedge shot to 8 feet on the 18th. Currently ranked No. 31 in the FedEx Cup standings, Woodland is attempting to move into the top 30 to qualify for the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, a feat he has not achieved in six years. He is managing his physical recovery following 2023 brain surgery, noting the need to sit down after his tee shot on the 18th and utilize a cool, dark room post-round to reset.
Leaderboard Pursuers and FedEx Cup Stakes
J.J. Spaun celebrated his 36th birthday by shooting a 66, leaving him two shots off the lead. Clark, Woodland, and Spaun are all currently projected to finish within the top 30 of the FedEx Cup points list. Sungjae Im, currently ranked No. 40, posted a 64 to sit three strokes behind Clark. Im is seeking to maintain a streak of reaching the season finale every year since his 2019 PGA Tour debut.
Patrick Cantlay, starting the week at No. 43, carded a 65 to reach 8-under 132. He is joined at that mark by Michael Thorbjornsen, the Rocket Classic winner ranked No. 41, who turned in a 66. While Clark entered the week at No. 5 in the standings following wins at the U.S. Open and The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, others are fighting for the final spots in the $23 million points race led by Scottie Scheffler.
Recovery Rounds and Physical Challenges
Scottie Scheffler, who is battling an illness, improved upon an opening 72 with a 5-under 65 on Friday. Despite the lower score, he fell to nine shots behind Clark. Rory McIlroy recorded a 69, featuring only two birdies, to sit five strokes off the pace. Clark’s current form follows a fifth-place tie at the TPC Southwind last week, a recovery from a missed cut at the Rocket Classic where he suffered arm pain after throwing a ceremonial first pitch for the Detroit Tigers.
Woodland, a Kansas native playing less than four hours from home, previously held the 36-hole lead at Bellerive during the 2018 PGA Championship. He described the challenge of maintaining his heart rate and energy levels as a constant battle while trying to secure his position for next week's finale in Atlanta. The top 30 players following this weekend will advance to East Lake, where the winner will claim the FedEx Cup title.
