Yankees Place Jazz Chisholm Jr. on IL, Recall Anthony Volpe from Triple-A

Anthony Volpe rejoined the Yankees on Thursday after Jazz Chisholm Jr. was sidelined with a right thumb sprain.

The New York Yankees recalled Anthony Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday to replace second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right thumb. Chisholm’s stint on the IL is retroactive to Wednesday. The roster move occurred ahead of Thursday night's series finale against the Colorado Rockies at Yankee Stadium.

Volpe returns to the big league roster after losing his starting shortstop position to rookie George Lombard Jr. earlier this season. During his recent stint with the RailRiders, Volpe batted .524 with three home runs and six RBIs over his last six games. While in the minors, the 2023 Gold Glove winner appeared in 19 games at second base and also saw time at shortstop and third base. Since being optioned on Aug. 4, he hit .295 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs across 27 Triple-A contests.

Chisholm’s injury adds to a history of medical absences since joining New York from Miami in July 2024. He previously missed more than a month due to a right oblique strain and sat out nearly two weeks with a left elbow sprain. Volpe enters the lineup batting .240 with one home run and 19 RBIs in 56 games at the major league level this year, following a delayed season debut on May 13 due to labrum surgery.
