The 2026 Players Championship features a 123-man field competing for a $4.5 million winner's share at TPC Sawgrass.
The 2026 Players Championship begins Thursday at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course with a 123-man field competing for a $25 million purse. The winner of the PGA Tour flagship event will secure $4.5 million and 750 FedEx Cup points. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler enters the week with one victory this season, having captured his 20th career title at the American Express on Jan. 22. Scheffler, who became the first back-to-back champion in tournament history in 2023 and 2024, aims to join Jack Nicklaus as the only three-time winner of the event. Nicklaus previously secured titles in 1974, 1976, and 1978.
Rory McIlroy returns as the defending champion after defeating J.J. Spaun in a Monday playoff during the 2025 tournament. However, McIlroy’s status is under scrutiny following a withdrawal prior to the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational last Saturday. The four-time major champion cited lower-back spasms triggered by a gym session and exacerbated on the practice range. Before his injury, the Northern Irishman tied for second at the Genesis Invitational but has struggled with consistency, posting four consecutive opening rounds of 70 or higher.
Statistical Leaders and Recent Form at Sawgrass
Austin Eckroat enters the week following a dominant 13th PGA Tour victory at the Farmers Insurance Open on Jan. 29, where he won by seven shots. While Eckroat has missed the cut in three of his last five appearances at the Stadium Course, he also holds two top-10 finishes there. In contrast, Tom Hoge has found consistent success at TPC Sawgrass, holding the tournament record with a 10-under 62 carded during the 2023 third round. Hoge tied for third in both 2023 and 2024, despite currently sitting 95th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Jake Knapp arrives as a statistical standout, ranking third in strokes gained: total (2.183) and eighth in driving distance at 319.4 yards. Knapp tied for 12th in his 2025 debut at this event but withdrew from his last start at Bay Hill due to illness. Akshay Bhatia also brings momentum, having secured his third PGA Tour win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Bhatia tied for third at the 2025 Players Championship with a 10-under-par total in just his second career start at the venue.
Breakthrough Contenders and Equipment Changes
Jacob Bridgeman earned his first tour victory at Riviera, finishing one shot ahead of McIlroy and Kurt Kitayama. The former Clemson star leads the tour in strokes gained: putting at 1.276. Another young talent, Ludvig Åberg, recently moved near the Stadium Course for home-course advantage. Åberg finished solo eighth at 5-under in his 2024 debut and recently tied for third at Bay Hill after an early-season illness caused him to withdraw from the American Express.
Collin Morikawa ended a winless drought dating back to October 2023 by winning at Pebble Beach on Feb. 22. Morikawa credited a mallet putter borrowed from Kitayama for the victory; he previously tied for 10th at 7-under during the 2025 Players Championship. Viktor Hovland is also making adjustments, returning to former swing coach T.J. Yeaton and his old Ping driver after failing to contend at Pebble Beach or the Pacific Palisades event. Hovland’s Sawgrass history includes a tie for third in 2023 and a ninth-place finish in 2022.
Course History and Veteran Performances
Hideki Matsuyama has recorded seven top-25 finishes in 11 starts at TPC Sawgrass, including a solo fifth in 2023 and a tie for sixth in 2024. He lost a playoff to Chris Gotterup on the first hole in Phoenix earlier this year. Gotterup himself ranks fifth on tour in driving distance at 322 yards and won both the Sony Open in Hawaii and the WM Phoenix Open this season. Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood seeks to improve on his 2019 solo fifth-place finish. Fleetwood has started the 2026 season with a tie for fourth at Pebble Beach and a tie for seventh at the Genesis Invitational.
Xander Schauffele, a two-time runner-up at this event (2018, 2024), is recovering from a 2025 rib injury and recently tied for seventh at the most recent signature event in California. Si Woo Kim, the 2017 champion, has five top-13 finishes this season, including a runner-up result at Torrey Pines. Off the course, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp is scheduled to address the media on Wednesday to discuss the future vision of the tour. The 2026 tournament marks the flagship event's continued residence in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, as the weather begins to warm on the East Coast.
