Aaron Ashby surpassed Andrew Miller for the most scoreless innings by a reliever in a single postseason during a 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Tampa Bay Rays avoided a World Series sweep Tuesday night with a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in 12 innings. Despite the loss, Brewers left-hander Aaron Ashby set a new MLB record for the most scoreless innings by a reliever in a single postseason. Ashby retired all seven batters he faced, including a perfect ninth and 10th inning, to reach 18 scoreless innings across nine appearances this October. He surpassed the previous mark of 16 innings set by Andrew Miller in 2016.

Ashby exited the game with one out in the 11th inning after his fastball velocity dipped to 99 mph and his pitch count reached 31. During this postseason run, he has recorded 20 strikeouts while allowing just five hits and three walks. Including the regular season, the left-hander has now thrown 22⅔ consecutive scoreless innings.

Milwaukee took a 3-2 lead in the 12th inning on a solo home run by rookie Cooper Pratt. However, the Rays responded in the bottom half of the frame after third baseman Joey Ortiz committed a throwing error on a Junior Caminero grounder. Reliever Shane Drohan, making his first appearance since Oct. 15, then surrendered four consecutive singles to Liam Hicks, Jonny DeLuca, Chandler Simpson, and Ben Williamson to end the game. The Brewers used seven total pitchers in the contest, while their bullpen has now allowed nine earned runs over 61⅔ innings this postseason. Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday night featuring Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski.
