Tampa Bay forced a Game 5 after Ben Williamson hit a walk-off single in the 12th inning to secure a 4-3 win over Milwaukee.
The Tampa Bay Rays avoided a World Series sweep on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in 12 innings. Trailing by a run in the bottom of the 12th, Jonny DeLuca tied the game with an RBI single to center field that scored pinch-runner Cedric Mullins. Ben Williamson, who entered the at-bat 1-for-15 in the postseason, then drove a walk-off single over first baseman Jake Bauers to secure the victory.
Milwaukee had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th inning when Cooper Pratt hit a tiebreaking home run off Rays pitcher Ian Seymour. The Brewers were three outs away from their first championship before a throwing error by third baseman Joey Ortiz on a Junior Caminero grounder allowed the Rays to begin their comeback against reliever Antonio Senzatela. Liam Hicks added a single against Shane Drohan, who was making his first appearance since Oct. 15, to help load the bases before the final sequence.
With this result, Tampa Bay becomes the fifth team in MLB history to win Game 4 after trailing 3-0 in the World Series. The previous four teams to accomplish this feat all lost in Game 5. The 2004 Boston Red Sox remain the only team in 43 attempts to successfully overcome a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven postseason series. Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday night in St. Petersburg.
