World No. 18 Alex Eala secured a bronze medal for the Philippines after falling 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Wang Xiyu in the Asian Games semifinals.
Alex Eala secured a bronze medal at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya after falling to China's Wang Xiyu in the women's singles semifinals. Despite winning the opening set 6-3 and leading the first five games of the match, the 21-year-old Filipina eventually lost the next two sets 6-3, 6-2. Eala entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and the highest-ranked player in the draw, holding a world ranking of No. 18.
Prior to the semifinal defeat, Eala recorded victories against Patcharin Cheapchandej and Joanna Garland to advance through the bracket. Her participation in the tournament required bypassing the WTA 1000 China Open, a mandatory entry for players at her ranking, as well as other stops on the WTA Tour Asian Swing. This result marks Eala's second consecutive Asian Games bronze medal, following her performance at the 2023 Games in Hangzhou.
Eala's 2026 season includes reaching a career-high ranking and capturing a WTA 500 title. Although ESPN previously listed her as a primary gold medal contender for the Philippines, the semifinal loss concludes her singles campaign in Japan. She remains one of the few Filipino athletes to have attained global status on the professional tennis circuit while concurrently representing the national team in regional multisport events.
