Alex Eala Advances to Asian Games Semifinals with Straight-Set Win

Alex Eala secured a spot in the women's singles semifinals at the 20th Asian Games by defeating Joanna Garland of Chinese Taipei 7-5, 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The victory at Higashiyama Park Tennis Center guarantees the 21-year-old Filipina at least a bronze medal. After the players traded breaks to reach a 5-5 tie in the opening set, Eala won three consecutive games, aided by a break in the 11th game, to take the lead.

Statistical data from the first set showed Eala holding a 29-17 advantage in receiving points, while Garland led in first serve numbers at 21-12. Eala dominated the second set with a 6-0 finish, marking her second consecutive bagel following a similar result against Patcharin Cheapchandej in the round of 16. The second set featured a 4-0 start for Eala, including breaks in the second, fourth, and fifth games before she held serve to close the match.

Eala is scheduled to face fourth seed Wang Xiyu of China in the semifinals. Wang advanced to the final four by defeating Moyuka Uchijima 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Additionally, Eala is slated to compete in a women's doubles second-round match alongside partner Shaira Rivera against the Chinese duo of Jiang Xiyu and Yang Zhaoxuan.
