Anthony Edwards will undergo a cleanup procedure on his right knee Thursday after an MRI revealed damage not detected in previous scans.
Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards is scheduled for arthroscopic surgery on his right knee this Thursday to address a lingering injury. The procedure follows a Tuesday MRI that revealed new damage not detected during scans conducted before training camp or during the playoffs. While president of basketball operations Tim Connelly did not specify a diagnosis, he stated the team expects Edwards to be "good as new" once he recovers. A specific return timetable, ranging from weeks to months, will be determined following the operation.
Edwards recently set a franchise record by scoring 133 points through the first four games of the season, including a 47-point performance in an overtime loss at Cleveland on Monday. Despite being listed as questionable for that contest, he played through discomfort after being seen grimacing and grabbing his knee during Sunday’s home opener. The 25-year-old was limited to a career-low 61 games last season due to right knee pain and previously missed two playoff games last spring with a left knee bone bruise.
The Timberwolves lineup, which recently added point guard LaMelo Ball, will now rely on backcourt depth featuring Ayo Dosunmu, Terrence Shannon Jr., and Bones Hyland. Minnesota is already playing without guard Donte DiVincenzo, who is sidelined with a torn right Achilles tendon suffered during the postseason. Connelly noted that Edwards consented to the surgery "kicking and screaming" due to his desire to remain on the court.
