Arthur Fery Leads Great Britain Davis Cup Challenge Against Ecuador

Arthur Fery and world No. 95 Toby Samuel will lead Great Britain’s singles challenge against Ecuador at the Copper Box in London this weekend. The British team, captained by Leon Smith, aims to secure a spot in the final eight for the first time since 2023. The lineup was adjusted on the eve of the tie after Cameron Norrie, the squad's most experienced singles player, was ruled out by an arm injury. Harry Wendelken has been added to the roster as Norrie’s replacement.

Fery, currently ranked 36th in the world, enters the tie as a substantial favorite against Ecuador’s Alvaro Guillen Meza, who is ranked No. 293. The 24-year-old British leader recently reached the Wimbledon semifinals as a wild card and contested his first ATP Tour final in the United States last month. Samuel will face Ecuadorian No. 1 Andres Andrade, who holds a world ranking of 203. The British doubles pairing features new US Open champion Neal Skupski and world number one Henry Patten.

Ecuador enters the London tie having recently defeated Australia in a February qualifier. Their squad includes Gonzalo Escobar, who is scheduled for the doubles rubber. The South American team is led by captain Raul Viver, who also headed the team during their 3-2 victory over a British side featuring Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski at Wimbledon in 2000. Fery’s only previous Davis Cup appearance occurred one year ago, where he secured a victory against Poland’s Olaf Pieczkowski while ranked 227th.
