Austin Smotherman carded 10 birdies on Friday at Black Desert Resort to post a 9-under 62, matching his career-low PGA Tour round. The 32-year-old reached a 36-hole total of 17-under 125, earning a one-shot lead at the Bank of Utah Championship. Smotherman concluded his second round with three consecutive birdies, including a 20-foot putt on the par-3 17th. Eight of his 10 birdies during the round were converted from inside 10 feet.
Kevin Roy sits in second place at 16-under par after opening the tournament with consecutive rounds of 63. Roy, currently ranked No. 87 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, improved his personal best 36-hole score by five strokes. Doug Ghim moved into a tie for third at 15-under following a bogey-free 62. He is joined by Kevin Streelman, who shot a 65 on Friday despite playing on a recently expired major medical exemption.
Jackson Koivun secured a spot for the weekend by making the cut on the number at 6-under 136. After his drive landed in a fairway bunker on the par-5 18th, Koivun used a 5-wood to clear lava rock and eventually converted a six-foot birdie putt for a 67. Local favorite Tony Finau was among the players who failed to make the cut. The event in Ivins is the second of eight tournaments determining the top 125 players who will retain full PGA Tour cards for the following season.
