Baker Mayfield Dislocates Throwing Thumb in 23-16 Loss to Vikings

Quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered a dislocated right thumb with 1:54 remaining in the Buccaneers' 23-16 defeat against the Vikings.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered a dislocated right thumb on his throwing arm during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The injury occurred with 1:54 remaining on a fourth-and-13 play when Mayfield was hit by inside linebacker Blake Cashman while attempting a pass that was intercepted by Andrew Van Ginkel. Coach Todd Bowles confirmed that while initial X-rays did not show a fracture, Mayfield will undergo an MRI on Monday to check for ligament tears, soft tissue damage, or hairline cracks.

The Buccaneers fell to 0-3 following the defeat, which ended with undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels replacing Mayfield for the final drive. Daniels threw an interception on the team's last possession. Bowles indicated that Daniels, a free agent out of Kansas, is currently the projected starter if Mayfield is unable to play. Mayfield, who has started 54 consecutive regular-season games for Tampa Bay, left the locker room with his right hand in an ice bag.

Additional injuries impacted the roster as wide receiver Jalen McMillan is also scheduled for a Monday MRI on his left knee. McMillan was injured on the team's opening possession after being hit by safety Josh Metellus on a third-and-5 corner route. This injury involves the same knee McMillan previously hurt during training camp. The Buccaneers were trailing 20-16 at the time of Mayfield's injury before finishing the game with a seven-point deficit.
