Bo Bichette will exercise his $42 million player option to remain with the New York Mets for the 2027 season, according to a source who confirmed the move to ESPN on Friday. The decision secures Bichette one of the six highest salaries in Major League Baseball for next year. The 28-year-old infielder also possesses an additional $42 million player option for the 2028 season as part of the three-year, $142 million contract he signed in January.

During the 2026 season, Bichette appeared in 160 games, batting .260 with 18 home runs and a .702 OPS. His 96 wRC+ placed him 4% below the league average at the plate. After moving from shortstop to third base, he struggled early, hitting .219 with five home runs through June. However, he improved over the final 101 games of the regular season, posting a .284 average with 13 home runs and a .772 OPS.

The Mets finished the 2026 season in last place in the National League East with a 74-88 record. The team missed the postseason for the second consecutive year despite carrying the second-highest payroll in the majors. Offensive production was limited by injuries to Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, though the roster saw debuts from rookie outfielders A.J. Ewing and Carson Benge. The Athletic was the first to report Bichette's decision to exercise the option.
