Brad Friedel’s 450 Appearances Lead All Premier League Americans

Brad Friedel holds the record for 310 consecutive starts, while Clint Dempsey remains the top American scorer in England with 57 goals.

Brad Friedel leads all United States men's national team players in England with 450 total league appearances and a record 310 consecutive starts. His streak began at the start of the 2004-05 season with Blackburn Rovers and continued through his tenure at Aston Villa until October 7, 2012, while playing for Tottenham Hotspur. Friedel is one of only four goalkeepers to score in the league, netting a goal against Charlton Athletic on February 21, 2004, during a 3-2 defeat. Clint Dempsey follows as the most productive outfield player, recording 57 career goals. During the 2011-12 campaign, Dempsey tied for fourth in the league with 17 goals and became the first American to reach the 50-goal milestone in the top flight.

Tim Howard secured 350 appearances for Everton and Manchester United, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield. Like Friedel, Howard scored a goal from his own area against Bolton Wanderers in a 2-1 loss during the 2011-12 season. He was named to the PFA Team of the Season for 2003-04. In modern competition, Chris Richards has amassed 92 appearances for Crystal Palace, contributing to a 2025 FA Cup title, a 2025 Community Shield victory, and the 2026 UEFA Conference League championship. Antonee Robinson provided 10 assists for Fulham during the 2024-25 season, the highest total for any defender in the league that year.

Outfield Records and Transfer Milestones

Christian Pulisic remains the most expensive American transfer in history following a $73.1 million move from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea. Across four seasons, he logged 5,575 minutes in 98 league appearances and became the first American to play in a UEFA Champions League final. Geoff Cameron ranks second among American outfield players with 168 appearances for Stoke City, where he played right back, center back, and central midfielder. Antonee Robinson currently sits 11 appearances behind Cameron for that second-place spot. Brian McBride recorded 32 goals in 140 appearances for Fulham, following an initial eight-match loan at Everton where he scored four times.

John Harkes was the first American to play in the Premier League during the 1992-93 inaugural season with Sheffield Wednesday. During that same campaign, Roy Wegerle scored the first goal by an American while playing for Blackburn Rovers, and Preki logged minutes for Everton. Harkes finished his career with 43 Premier League appearances across spells with Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham United, and Nottingham Forest. Carlos Bocanegra served as one of four Americans to captain Fulham, scoring five goals during the 2006-07 season to finish second on the team behind McBride.

Goalkeeping Dominance and Cup Success

Kasey Keller earned over 200 Premier League appearances across stints with Leicester City, Tottenham, Southampton, and Fulham. He backstopped Leicester to the 1996-97 League Cup title and secured Fulham’s top-flight status with a 1-0 shutout against Portsmouth on the final day of the 2007-08 season. Friedel also found cup success, leading Blackburn Rovers to the 2002 League Cup trophy. Tim Howard’s move to Manchester United in 2003 from the MetroStars marked the first time a U.S. keeper joined the club during the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Current U.S. Players in the 2026-27 Season

Six Americans are positioned for significant playing time in the 2026-27 season. This group includes Brenden Aaronson at Leeds United, Tyler Adams at AFC Bournemouth, and Chris Richards alongside Zavier Gozo at Crystal Palace. Antonee Robinson continues his tenure at Fulham, while Haji Wright represents Coventry City. These players follow a lineage that includes Geoff Cameron, who transitioned from the University of Rhode Island to a six-season career in England. Clint Dempsey’s 2009-10 season included a lob goal against Juventus that helped Fulham reach the UEFA Europa League final.
