José Mourinho begins his second stint at Real Madrid this Saturday against Espanyol, managing a squad featuring Kylian Mbappé and club-record signing Yan Diomande.

José Mourinho returns to the Real Madrid dugout this Saturday for a LaLiga season opener against Espanyol. The match, broadcast live on Disney+ in the UK, marks Mourinho’s first competitive fixture since his summer appointment and his first game in charge of the club since his initial 2010-2013 tenure. Madrid enters the 2026-27 campaign seeking to halt Barcelona’s streak of two consecutive league titles, following a two-year period where the capital club failed to secure a major trophy.

During his first pre-match news conference on Friday, Mourinho addressed the "difficult" tactical challenge of integrating Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham into a single starting 11. While the manager labeled the trio "incredible players," he noted that establishing a functional structure for all three simultaneously is harder than the individual successes found by Carlo Ancelotti with Vinícius Jr. in Brazil, Didier Deschamps with Mbappé, or Thomas Tuchel with Bellingham at the World Cup. Despite these complexities, Mourinho denied that the stars are "incompatible" and expressed confidence in their collective potential.

Tactical Integration and Record Signings

The attacking rotation is further bolstered by Yan Diomande, the club’s record signing. Mourinho emphasized that defensive effort from his forward line is "non-negotiable," responding to past criticisms regarding the group's reluctance to track back when out of possession. The manager stated that commitment must be present in every minute of every game to ensure the team functions as a cohesive unit. Vinícius Jr. remains a cornerstone of this project after opting to stay at the Bernabéu and signing a new contract.

Addressing the midfield composition, Mourinho confirmed that Madrid missed out on signing Spain captain Rodri, who instead joined rivals Barcelona. Although Mourinho admitted to speaking with Rodri about a potential transfer, he insisted the squad does not have a deficit in the center of the pitch. He described the Manchester City midfielder as the "icing on the cake" but pointed to a deep rotation including Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, Bernardo Silva, and Arda Güler, noting that Güler has the capacity to adapt to a midfield role over time.

Resolving Dressing Room Tensions

Mourinho also addressed internal squad dynamics, specifically the relationship between Tchouaméni and Valverde. The two midfielders were involved in a dressing-room row last season that resulted in Valverde being hospitalised. Despite arriving with significant information regarding the clash, Mourinho chose to "start from zero" rather than intervene. He reported that he has seen no need to discuss the incident with the pair, observing that their current interactions appear normal and do not reflect the previous conflict.

Expectations for the 2026-27 Campaign

The Portuguese manager dismissed suggestions of feeling pressure during his second spell at the club, characterizing his mindset as "adrenaline" rather than stress. He maintained that success at Real Madrid is defined strictly by silverware, stating that ending a season without trophies is not considered successful. The objective remains reclaiming domestic dominance from Barcelona, who have won back-to-back LaLiga crowns.

Kickoff against Espanyol is scheduled for Saturday night, serving as the debut for a revamped Madrid attack that features Mbappé alongside established stars. Mourinho’s tactical setup will be under immediate scrutiny as he attempts to balance the offensive output of his high-profile signings with the defensive work rate he demanded during his Friday briefing. The squad arrives at the RCDE Stadium looking to secure three points and set the tone for a season where results are the only metric of achievement.
