Breece Hall Strains Right Groin in Practice; Jets RB Slated for Imaging Tests

New York Jets running back Breece Hall suffered a right groin strain during Monday's practice while running a red zone swing pass.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets running back Breece Hall suffered a right groin strain during Monday’s practice session, an incident that occurred on the grass field without any defensive contact. The 25-year-old playmaker, who rushed for a career-high 1,065 yards last season, went down to one knee just yards from the end zone after catching a swing pass in the red zone. Following the non-contact play, Hall limped to the sideline for an examination in the medical tent before retreating to the locker room.

Coach Aaron Glenn stated immediately following the session that he does not believe the injury is a "big deal," though the team has scheduled imaging tests to determine the exact severity. The Jets are currently 27 days away from their season opener against the Tennessee Titans. Hall is currently the eighth highest-paid running back in the NFL by average annual salary, having signed a three-year, $43.5 million contract in May after initially receiving the franchise tag during the offseason.

Backfield Depth and Roster Impact

The injury to Hall leaves the Jets' backfield thin as they navigate the remainder of training camp. Braelon Allen, the team’s No. 2 running back, admitted his "stomach dropped" seeing the starter go down, though he expressed hope for a quick return. Allen, a 235-pound back, is himself returning from major knee surgery and recently recorded a 31-yard touchdown run during the preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Isaiah Davis, the No. 3 running back on the depth chart, has already been sidelined for one week due to a minor knee injury. Davis is expected to remain out for at least one additional week. With Hall and Davis both dealing with ailments, the active rotation currently features Allen and Kene Nwangwu, followed by rookie free agents Chip Trayanum and Sam Scott. The organization is reportedly considering the addition of a veteran to bolster the group.

Hall’s Injury History and Offensive Role

New offensive coordinator Frank Reich has publicly stated his intention to utilize a rush-heavy scheme with Hall serving as the featured player. Hall has missed only two games over the last three seasons, though his rookie campaign in 2022 was cut short by a torn ACL that cost him the final 10 games of that year. Glenn emphasized that the coaching staff intends to be ultra-cautious with the evaluation process, noting that while players are honest about their physical status, the team must avoid pushing limits to the point of regression.

Additional Jets Injury Updates

In other roster news, quarterback Geno Smith returned to full practice participation on Monday. Smith had missed the preseason opener due to a sore left ankle sustained during a joint practice with the Buccaneers last Wednesday. During Monday's session, Smith was observed wearing a sleeve on his lower leg and displayed a slight limp at various intervals.

Defensive reinforcements also arrived as nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat and edge rusher Joseph Ossai both practiced for the first time since being removed from their respective injury lists. The team continues to monitor the health of their primary offensive weapons as the preseason schedule progresses toward the regular season start in Tennessee.
