The defeat marked the third consecutive season in which Brighton has beaten the defending champions, following previous wins against Manchester City and Liverpool. While Arsenal entered the match having not conceded three goals in a league game since May 2023, their defense allowed Brighton to dominate despite the Seagulls having 24 hours less recovery time following a midweek Carabao Cup win at Manchester United.

Midfielder Declan Rice struggled with positional discipline, leaving gaps that allowed 35-year-old Gross to dictate play.
