According to Ian Rapoport, the organization views the first two road games of the season as a natural sample size to determine if Shedeur Sanders should replace Watson as the starter. The evaluation follows a 34-10 season-opening defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In the Week 1 loss, Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, recording one touchdown and one interception. While coach Todd Monken noted that Watson performed better in the second half, the overall offensive operation caused frustration within the building. Monken stated that the team must improve its play-calling and surrounding support for the quarterback, though he confirmed the game tape supported starting Watson for a second consecutive week.
