Cameron Young Fires 61 to Share Rocket Classic Lead at 10 Under

Cameron Young tied the Detroit Golf Club record with a 61 on Friday to reach 10 under and share the Rocket Classic lead.

Cameron Young birdied seven of his first eight holes during Friday's second round to post a 61, moving to 10 under par for the tournament. This performance earned him a share of the Rocket Classic lead alongside Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Fishburn, who both carded rounds of 66 at Detroit Golf Club. Young’s bogey-free effort matched the course record and followed a front-nine stretch where he admitted to thinking about shooting a 55, which would have eclipsed the PGA Tour record of 58 held by Jim Furyk.

The world’s No. 3 ranked player added two birdies on the back nine to complete his round, though he expressed frustration at missing several 10-foot birdie opportunities late in the day. Young previously recorded a 59 at the 2024 Travelers Championship and currently holds three victories this season. His 61 allowed him to leapfrog first-round leader Peter Malnati, who fell one stroke back to 9 under after following his opening 61 with a 1-over 71 on Friday.

Leaderboard Chasers and Scoring Surges

Matt Wallace sits two strokes behind the leaders at 8 under after signing for a 64. He is tied with Rickie Fowler, the 2023 champion, who shot a 68. Fowler reached 11 under to briefly hold the solo lead before dropping back due to three bogeys on the back nine. His struggles included a three-putt from 24 feet on the 11th hole and a wayward shot into thigh-high fescue on the 13th that resulted in a greenside bunker lie. Fowler managed to close his round with a birdie on the 18th hole to remain in contention for the weekend.

Xander Schauffele joined the group at 9 under par after posting a second-round 66. Further down the leaderboard, Hideki Matsuyama carded a 68 to reach 5 under, successfully extending the PGA Tour’s longest active cuts streak to 30 consecutive events. He is tied with 2022 winner Tony Finau, who shot a 67. Finau entered the week ranked No. 87 in the FedEx Cup standings and is seeking a high finish to move into the top 70 before the Wyndham Championship.

Kuchar’s Ace and Notable Missed Cuts

Matt Kuchar finished the day at 4 under par, highlighted by his seventh career hole-in-one. Kuchar used a 9-iron to ace the 156-yard, par-3 5th hole. Following the shot, he invited a young fan inside the ropes to retrieve the ball, which Kuchar signed with a black marker. The veteran golfer noted that the moment was an easy way to make a child's day while improving his own standing in the tournament's eighth and final year.

The cut line fell at 3 under par, resulting in several high-profile exits. U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark missed the weekend after a 74 left him at 5 over par. Chris Gotterup, the world No. 7 and a three-time winner this season, saw his streak of 14 consecutive made cuts end after finishing at 1 over. Akshay Bhatia, currently No. 12 in the FedEx Cup standings, also failed to advance after a 71 left him at 1 under for the event.
