Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) will challenge Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight championship on Oct. 31 despite recent violence in Saudi Arabia.
Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) is moving forward with his scheduled WBC super middleweight championship challenge against Christian Mbilli (29-0, 24 KOs) in Riyadh on Oct. 31. According to Saudi government official Turki Alalshikh, the 36-year-old fighter confirmed his participation despite recent Houthi rebel attacks on the King Khalid International Airport. A Saturday strike reportedly killed 12 people and injured over 300, while a second projectile hit a passenger terminal on Sunday, resulting in additional undisclosed injuries.
Alvarez enters this bout following a decision loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025. This Oct. 31 appearance marks his second career fight in Saudi Arabia, having previously competed in Riyadh in May 2025. Despite the escalating regional violence and a U.S. government security alert recommending that citizens avoid the airport and surrounding areas, Alalshikh stated via social media that Alvarez reached out to reaffirm his commitment to the event.
Mbilli brings an undefeated record of 29-0 with 24 knockouts into the championship contest. The event proceeds as the central fixture of the Riyadh combat sports schedule for the end of October.
