Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) is scheduled to face Christian Mbilli in a title fight on October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. To prepare for the bout, Alvarez moved his training camp from San Diego to former heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk's gym in Gandia, Spain. The relocation to the coastal city near Valencia allows the fighter to train in a time zone just one hour behind Riyadh, significantly reducing the 10-hour difference he would face coming from California.
Alvarez is seeking to reclaim the WBC super middleweight title he lost to Terence Crawford in September 2025. In an interview at Usyk’s gym on September 29, Alvarez noted that he is working with Usyk’s conditioning team to adapt his body to new schedules, a process he estimates requires 21 days. He described Mbilli as a world champion with high stamina and a high punch volume, stating that the challenger must do a lot to overcome his experience and specific characteristics.
Regarding his future, the 34-year-old fighter indicated he plans to compete in four or five more matches before retiring. While he has expressed interest in a final career fight at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City following a Zoom call with Televisa chairman Emilio Azcarraga, he does not intend to remain in the sport as a promoter after his boxing career concludes.
