The Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 on Wednesday night at Capital One Arena. In his final NHL home opener, 41-year-old captain Alex Ovechkin was held without a point and recorded only three shifts during the third period. The Capitals opted to keep Ovechkin off the ice during a late-game empty-net situation while defending a two-goal lead.
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby finished the contest with a minus-4 rating, marking the worst single-game plus/minus performance against Washington in his career. The game represented the 101st meeting between Ovechkin and Crosby since their first matchup on November 22, 2005. Both players are currently in their 22nd season with a single franchise, joining a list of NHL legends that includes Gordie Howe and Steve Yzerman.
Washington’s lineup featured rookies Cole Hutson and Ilya Protas, while Pittsburgh dressed Ben Kindel; all three players were born after the Ovechkin-Crosby rivalry began in 2005. Before the game, Ovechkin's sons, Ilya and Sergei, announced their father during player introductions. Following his recent retirement announcement, Ovechkin confirmed plans to conduct an equipment swap with Crosby later this season.
