The Philadelphia Flyers opened their 2026-27 season with a 7-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the largest margin of defeat in a season opener in franchise history.
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 7-0 on Wednesday night, marking the largest margin of defeat in a season opener in Flyers history. Following the loss, coach Rick Tocchet noted the team failed to win battles throughout the contest. This performance comes after a season in which Philadelphia recorded 98 points, defeated the Penguins in a six-game first-round playoff series, and was eventually swept by the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round.
During the offseason, general manager Danny Briere attempted to sign Anaheim Ducks restricted free agent Leo Carlsson to a five-year, $90 million offer sheet. The Ducks matched the $18 million annual cap hit, which currently stands as the highest in the NHL. This transaction influenced subsequent league salaries, including a six-year, $13.5 million annual deal for former Flyers draft pick Cutter Gauthier in Anaheim.
Philadelphia enters the season with several young players under evaluation, including rookie Matvei Michkov, who scored 26 goals in 80 games last year. Forward Trevor Zegras, acquired from the Ducks in June 2025, recently signed a four-year, $36.5 million extension after recording 67 points in 81 games. Briere expressed concern regarding potential complacency among a roster that includes Calder Trophy candidate Porter Martone and forward Denver Barkey.
