Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alex de Minaur 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Vienna Open title. The second-seeded Spaniard secured the victory at the ATP 500 event without dropping a set, marking his seventh win in seven career meetings against the Australian. Alcaraz clinched the match by drawing De Minaur to the net with a sliced backhand drop shot before executing a lob and finishing with a cross-court forehand winner.
This victory represents the 28th career title for the seven-time Grand Slam winner and his fourth trophy of the year. His 2024 season highlights include winning the Australian Open to complete a career Grand Slam. Following this result, Alcaraz has now beaten De Minaur on grass, clay, and both indoor and outdoor hard courts.
To reach the final, Alcaraz eliminated Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals. The fifth-seeded De Minaur, who was seeking his second title of the year, advanced to the championship round by defeating Alexander Zverev. Despite the semifinal loss, Zverev is scheduled to move to the top of the world rankings on Monday. The Associated Press reported that Alcaraz aimed to maintain aggression throughout the match to force his opponent into a more defensive position.
