The Edmonton Oilers defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-1 on Saturday at SAP Center, despite star center Macklin Celebrini scoring his first goal of the season in his return from a lower-body injury. Celebrini, the 20-year-old Sharks captain, logged 21:59 of ice time across 24 shifts after missing two games. He finished the contest with two shots, two hits, and two penalty minutes.
Edmonton secured their fourth consecutive victory behind goals from Mattias Ekholm, Vasily Podkolzin, and Alex Formenton. Ekholm opened the scoring at 12:37 of the first period. Podkolzin increased the lead to 2-0 at 3:13 of the third period, assisted by Connor McDavid. Formenton then extended the advantage to 3-0 with a backhand shot approximately two minutes later. McDavid’s assist marked his 13th point and 10th assist of the season, moving him ahead of Jack Eichel for the league lead in both categories.
San Jose’s lone goal came midway through the third period when Celebrini found the back of the net. Tristan Jarry earned the win for Edmonton by stopping 19 shots, while Yaroslav Askarov made 17 saves for the Sharks. The loss followed a stretch where Celebrini was a late scratch against the Dallas Stars on Monday and missed a 3-2 overtime victory against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.
