Chiefs Aim to Scale Back Kenneth Walker III Workload Following 2-0 Start

Coach Andy Reid plans to reduce Kenneth Walker III's usage against the Miami Dolphins after the running back recorded 59 touches through two games.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced plans to reduce the workload for running back Kenneth Walker III in Sunday’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Walker currently leads all NFL skill-position players with 369 all-purpose yards and is tied with Jahmyr Gibbs for the league lead in touches with 59. The free-agent acquisition has recorded 29 broken tackles through the first two games of the season, contributing to the team's 2-0 record and a recent overtime victory against the Indianapolis Colts.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and running backs coach DeMarco Murray indicated that rookie Emmett Johnson will see increased opportunities to facilitate this transition. Johnson has produced 103 all-purpose yards on 14 touches during the season's opening two weeks. During the win over Indianapolis, the rookie highlighted his performance with a 12-yard gain on a short pass where he forced three defenders to collide.

Murray noted that while Walker prepared for a heavy workload during the team's training camp drills, the staff aims to find a better balance between the two players. The Chiefs intend to integrate Johnson, who wears No. 10, more frequently to provide rest for Walker, who wears No. 9, as the season progresses.
