Christian Yelich Named First Captain in Milwaukee Brewers History

Christian Yelich became the first captain in Milwaukee Brewers history on Saturday after receiving the blessing of franchise legend Robin Yount.

The Milwaukee Brewers named Christian Yelich the first captain in franchise history during a team meeting prior to Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The 34-year-old designated hitter, currently in his ninth season with the club, joins Salvador Perez and Aaron Judge as the only active captains in Major League Baseball. Manager Pat Murphy announced the decision for the NL Central champions, who currently hold the best record in the majors and have secured home-field advantage for the postseason.

Before accepting the role, Yelich requested approval from Hall of Famer Robin Yount, who spent his entire 20-year career in Milwaukee. Murphy reported that Yount agreed wholeheartedly with the appointment. Yelich, the 2018 NL MVP, was not included in the starting lineup for Saturday’s contest. He enters the final stretch of the season batting .236 with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs.
