Veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen has agreed to a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts worth up to $8.32 million.
The Indianapolis Colts reached an agreement on Monday with 34-year-old wide receiver Keenan Allen for a one-year contract worth up to $8.32 million. A team source confirmed the deal to ESPN following months of dialogue between the franchise and the veteran pass-catcher. Allen enters his 14th NFL season after recording 81 receptions, 777 yards, and four touchdowns during the 2025 campaign. He led the league in third-down production last year, recording 34 catches and 29 first downs in those specific situations, earning him the nickname "third-and-Keenan" among his peers.
This signing reunites Allen with Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers. During their shared tenure in California, Allen functioned as the primary target in an offensive system that shares several layers with the current Colts scheme. The veteran wideout was a third-round selection out of Cal in the 2013 NFL Draft and spent 11 seasons with the Chargers before a 2024 trade sent him to the Chicago Bears following a contract dispute. He returned to Los Angeles for the 2025 season, where he saw a team-high 122 targets from quarterback Justin Herbert.
Roster Adjustments and Injury Impact
Indianapolis moved to secure Allen to address a receiving corps thinned by recent roster changes and injuries. The team traded away Michael Pittman Jr. during the offseason and is currently without Alec Pierce, who is sidelined following ankle surgery. Pierce led the NFL in yards per reception last season and was slated to serve as the team’s No. 1 wideout before his medical procedure. The front office evaluated the existing lineup during training camp before determining that the veteran addition was necessary to bolster the unit.
Allen currently ranks 13th in NFL history with 1,055 career receptions. His statistical resume includes 12,051 receiving yards and 70 touchdown catches across his career. While his 9.6 yards per reception in 2025 represented a career low, the Colts intend to utilize him primarily on short and intermediate routes. This tactical deployment complements slot receiver Josh Downs, who is expected to execute more downfield patterns this season, and Pierce’s deep-threat capabilities.
Career Milestones and Chargers Legacy
As a six-time Pro Bowler, Allen is recognized as one of the most productive players in the history of the Chargers franchise. His 2025 performance proved he remained a reliable asset in high-pressure moments, specifically as Justin Herbert’s most frequent target on third downs. Despite his age, the 34-year-old maintained a high volume of work, finishing with the most targets on his previous roster.
Steichen and Allen maintained a professional relationship in the years following their initial time together on the Chargers staff. The head coach spent several months gauging Allen's interest in relocating to Indianapolis before the official agreement on Monday. The Colts' decision to finalize the deal comes as the team prepares for the upcoming season with a revamped offensive depth chart that now features one of the league's most prolific active reception leaders.
