Cowboys, Lions Among Teams Inquiring About Steelers Cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

The Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions are among a handful of teams that have contacted the Pittsburgh Steelers regarding the availability of cornerback Joey Porter Jr., league sources told ESPN. While Pittsburgh is reportedly willing to listen to offers for the fourth-year star, the organization is expected to require a strong compensation package to finalize a deal. The inquiries come as Porter seeks a new contract, though the Steelers maintain a policy of not negotiating extensions during the regular season.

Dallas is exploring secondary help as starting cornerback Cobie Durant is ruled out for Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens due to a hamstring injury. The Cowboys have already traded for Quinnen Williams, Rashan Gary, and Kenny Clark over the last 13 months, but the roster remains thin at the cornerback position. Similarly, the Detroit Lions have allowed the second-most passing yards in the NFL through the first two weeks and are currently without injured safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, as well as cornerback Avonte Maddox, who is out for the season with a foot injury.

Porter has not appeared in a game yet this season while recovering from a back injury. He was limited in practice this past week and is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Although Porter stated on Thursday that he would "definitely" play for Pittsburgh in 2026 despite the lack of a contract extension, he remained noncommittal regarding his availability for the upcoming game against Cincinnati.
